Some of the benefits of having a website include tremendous cost savings in advertising. And yet it offers a broader range of exposure compared to traditional advertising mediums. It is even accessible to potential customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
For a start-up company looking for inexpensive ways of advertising, having a website is one of the wisest investments that they could make. Comparing with making a company brochure, the process and requirements of developing a website is basically the same except for some of the added bonuses. Having a website also allows you to track the statistics on the visits that you get, where you get them and when. And if you have very well written content and very well designed landing pages (sometimes called lead capture page) for your website, you can get all sorts of information not just the IP addresses and the location of the visitor or which website they were referred from.
A very well designed landing page for your website coupled with a well organized content can help you get strategic information about the people who took the time out to visit your website. |

Why websites don't work |
| The number one complaint of people about their websites is that "It does not generate any sales". Just because you have a website with a few basic information about your company on a few web pages doesn't mean that people will start knocking on your door wanting to buy your products or avail of your services. Like most misconceptions about technology, information technology is not a magic pill that companies can take and cure all their worries. It is just a tool that they can use to achieve their objectives in a more efficient manner. How they use it is still their prerogative. |
| |
| Building a website is very much like putting up a shop. If you plan to put up a new business and is thinking about putting up a website, then you should plan it in parallel. You have to plan every little detail to make that shop attract not only the public but the buying public. Not only should the site be able to attract visitors, but also make the visitors want to stay longer and look around and eventually buy from you. |
| |
A lot of people focus on the aesthetics of the site. Nothing wrong with that, but after a few visits, people will grow tired and and be left with no reason to come back and visit your site. In time they will look elsewhere.
|
| |
Planning |
| Identify your target market and decide on the content that will attract your target market. Am sure this is easier said than done, but it still has to be done so make sure you spend quality time in determining who your target markets are and how to develop a content that will attract them to your site. Think ahead and make sure that you organize your content properly. Not thinking ahead and organizing your content may prove more expensive for your website than you think. In most cases, because of the additional expense that the company should spend to make it work turns them away from continuing the path of the web, so plan it well. |
| |
Consult with your web solutions provider on how you can capture information about the people who visit your site. The information gathered about the visitors to your website can help you validate if your strategy on capturing your target market is working. You can then tweak them along the way.

Web Design |
| Make sure the website is designed with consistency in mind. We've seen a lot of website where each pages shows a different concept of design. This will make visitors think that they may have stumbled into another website. The colors may not be based on the company's colors but it should at least be coherent with the overall color scheme. |
| |
Having a web design does not end with aesthetically designed pages and well written content. The pages should also flow. Visitors should be able to navigate back and forth easily without having them lose themselves in a maze of forward links, back links and pages. All clicks should be well thought of and each page should be able to link the users back to where they came from. And for the sake of being able to easily manage the content of the site. You should consider having to update large amounts of content at a time. This design consideration is always left out by designers thinking that users will only need to update one item/article at a time.

Coding |
Look for web developers that are experienced with optimized coding. Having optimized codes help with getting your website read by search engines. Search engines deploy web crawlers that read thru the pages of websites and index them to their databases. If these crawlers have a hard time reading thru those codes, then it will not rank your website too well.

Maintenance |
No matter how well a system is built, or how easy it is to manage. Someone has to go in there and spend time to manage the site. Regardless if you need to manage the infrastructure that supports the site, the content or both. It still has to be managed. For bigger sites you might need to have to consider at least having one team to manage the infrastructure and another to manage the content.
