Overselling and Over-promising: Beware
Date : 28-Aug-08
| What is this about-overselling and over-promising? |
Let's say you have acquired a Web hosting service and you paid for a 50-mb Web space. Chances are, in the beginning, you won't really use up all these space, with the 12-page, 35 kb/page Web site that you've uploaded. You have some space free.
Now, it pays to know whether the host you got is a reseller. If they are, get their assurance that when you need your space it's there; because sometimes resellers can oversell or over-promise. Ever wondered what the difference is?
If you come across a hosting service that sells for $5 per month for 300 gigabytes of Web space, this is overselling. Overselling is a practice among resellers. What the reseller should do is monitor diligently usage of space and the pattern of use for each account. When the need arises, the reseller should be able to provide your unused space instantaneously when you need it.
Overselling is not bad at all because it allows the resellers to earn while the space is not being used. What is bad is over-promising which happens when the space is needed and it's not there. |
Some manifestations that your extra space is not there and is being used:
|
- You can't upload pages.
- Your account is suspended because you've gone over the limit, or for no reason.
- Your connection is down; or it timed out.
|
In choosing a hosting service provider (reseller or not), remember the following:
|
- Make sure that the host earns from you. This way you are secure that theywill be there for the long-term, providing the service that you need as long asyou need it.
- Make sure you have upgrade options. You can ask them directly.
- Make sure the response time is quick. When the server is down, how fast canthey restore it? Five minutes?
- Make sure they have a support team to address such issues as back-up andrestoration of files; and higher level support requirements that will make orbreak your business.
- Make sure your provider does not over-promise. Check for overselling, too,and make sure your host monitors your usage, a way for you to know thatyour host cares for you.
